Frost tinted the windowpanes as I paced my study, my breath hissing out in clouds as every few steps I whipped back around to glare at the rose. Throughout these past ten years, nothing had touched it; not the light first frost like what now dusted the grounds, not lack of water, not the insects which always swarmed in the summer. No, it was perfectly safe in its little bell-jar. Its only enemy was time, and that was running out. For both of us. I snarled at it, the thicker stripe of fur down my spine standing up as I did so. The Beast: Prologue, Part 2Through the darkness of sleep, I heard an animal's breathing. It was heavy, gruff. A large animal. My heart beat faster, and the animal's breathing increased as well, almost in response. I didn't know how it had gotten into my bedchamber, but all I knew was that I didn't want to die mauled in my bed by some creature. "Bromsley?" I whispered, hoping against hope that my butler was aware of how perilous a situation his prince was in. "Bromsley." Suddenly, I froze, and so did the animal's breathing.
